In organisations like ours—deeply involved in nation-building and purpose-driven work—the idea of value often gets discussed in financial or operational terms. But I have always believed value is far broader. Value is trust. Value is clarity. Value is how people feel when they work with us, partner with us, or rely on us. As General Counsel, leading Legal, Contracts, Ethics, Compliance, and Secretarial functions, I naturally view this through the lens of fairness and transparency. Over time, I have come to see that legal thinking does not stand apart from ethics—it is strengthened by it. Together, they help us move from merely protecting value to actively creating it.
At Tata Projects, our work touches government bodies, private partners, communities, and our own teams. Each stakeholder carries expectations, responsibilities, and legitimate interests. Creating value for all is not about fulfilling every expectation; it is about ensuring that what we deliver rests on principles that are fair, transparent, and sustainable. Ethics gives these principles meaning. Legal gives them form. Together, they shape how we build and how we serve.
A powerful enabler of this philosophy is simplicity. Legal processes can often feel complex or intimidating—especially in an industry built on multi-year contracts, multi-party engagements, and shifting regulations. But complexity should never blur what is right. My aim has always been to make the law work for people, not overwhelm them—and ethics turns that intent into everyday behaviour. Clear communication, straightforward documentation, and explaining risks without creating anxiety empower teams to make sound, confident choices. When people understand both the legal framework and the ethical reasoning behind decisions, they choose paths that protect the project, strengthen client relationships, and uphold the organisation’s credibility.
We have therefore been rethinking how we work: simplifying contract templates, digitising workflows, and ensuring teams engage with counsel and ethical guidance early in the process. When people know not just what the rule is but why it matters, decisions become faster and more thoughtful. This reduces disputes, safeguards margins, and reinforces partnerships built on mutual respect.
But the most enduring value comes from culture. A legal function has real impact when compliance is no longer viewed as an obligation but as a natural way of working. Ethics turns rules into shared values. It guides behaviour when no one is watching, and provides steadiness when the line between right and convenient appears blurred. In a sector where reputation is earned slowly and lost quickly, doing the right thing—consistently and without fanfare—is one of our strongest assets.
As India accelerates its development journey, what strengthens an institution is not only its ability to execute, but its commitment to doing so with integrity and foresight. Beyond protection, our role is to enable teams, shape decisions, and ensure growth is anchored in responsibility. Value creation may be a shared mandate across functions, but the way we embed ethical judgment and legal clarity directly influences how that value is built, protected, and sustained across every project and partnership.
