When I joined Tata Projects as Chief Digital and Information Officer in December, I felt a deep sense of pride — not just in taking on a new role, but in becoming part of the Tata Group, an institution known for its unwavering commitment to integrity, ethics, excellence, and nation-building.
Tata Projects, in particular, stands out for its purpose-led approach to infrastructure — where quality, safety, agility, responsibility, and innovation are not just buzzwords, but deeply held values that guide every decision and action. It’s a culture that balances execution excellence with values-driven leadership, and that’s what makes the journey ahead so meaningful.
Over the last 90 days, I’ve immersed myself in understanding the business, the people, the projects, and the pulse of technology within the organisation. From project sites to corporate functions, one thing is abundantly clear: our people are the real differentiators.
Whether it’s the engineers driving innovation at the ground level or the IT teams quietly keeping our operations running smoothly, I’ve witnessed a level of ownership and resilience that’s inspiring. As we embark on a journey of digital transformation, it’s this very energy and commitment that will be at the core of our success.
Laying the Foundation: Listen First, Act Fast
In any transformation journey, listening is the best starting point. I’ve spent time meeting with leaders across functions to understand current pain points, technology gaps, and untapped opportunities. While there’s no shortage of ideas, what stood out is a collective eagerness to embrace change — if it adds real value.
Based on early insights, we’ve begun identifying quick wins in automation, analytics, and cloud optimisation — areas where we can unlock value without heavy investment.
Digital as a Lever for Efficiency, Cost Optimisation & Sustainability
One of our key priorities is enhancing project predictability, driving cost efficiency, and building sustainable execution models. Technology can play a huge role here — from streamlining procurement and reducing rework to optimising equipment utilisation and energy consumption.
We are exploring digital and AI-powered solutions that can:
- Improve resource planning and reduce idle time through intelligent forecasting
- Enable real-time project monitoring using AI-driven insights and anomaly detection to avoid delays
- Automate manual workflows, improving speed, accuracy, and decision turnaround
- Drive data-based decision-making with predictive analytics that reduce guesswork and cost overruns
- Support sustainability goals by tracking carbon footprint, optimising energy use, and enabling greener construction practices
These are not abstract ideas — they are grounded in business reality. Some of these initiatives are already moving into scale-up mode, while others are currently in pilot or proof-of-concept stages — all aimed at delivering tangible business and environmental impact.
Empowering People and Leadership to Lead the Change
Digital transformation is not an IT project. It’s a people-powered movement. For us to succeed, we need to invest not only in systems but in skills, leadership, and collaboration.
What has stood out to me is the depth of leadership talent across the organisation — individuals who are experts in their domains. What we now need is their willingness to step forward, take ownership, and actively drive change. Their influence and belief in the digital agenda will be key to scaling impact across the business.
I’d also like to take a moment to recognise the IT and digital team — the backbone of this transformation journey. In just a few weeks, I’ve seen the passion, technical depth, and quiet determination with which they keep critical systems running, support the business, and explore new possibilities. Their commitment to partnering with the business, embracing change, and pushing boundaries will be instrumental in making this vision a reality.
That’s why we’re focusing on:
- Creating a shared digital vision that the entire organisation can rally behind
- Enabling our teams with the right tools, training, and leadership alignment
- Building a culture that encourages experimentation, agility, and accountability
We’re also reimagining how the IT function itself operates — moving from a service mindset to one of co-creation and business partnership.
Putting Change Management at the Center
We recognise that change isn’t easy. It brings questions, uncertainty, and often resistance — and that’s perfectly natural. Which is why structured change management is a core part of our digital approach.
Our goal is not to push technology but to build adoption and belief:
- By involving business teams early and making them co-owners
- By clearly communicating the “why” behind every initiative
- By supporting teams through training, handholding, and feedback loops
- And by celebrating small wins to build momentum
When people feel supported through change, they become champions of IT. :)
The Road Ahead
We’re at an exciting inflection point. The groundwork is being laid for a bold digital future — one that not only enhances efficiency and reduces cost but also empowers our people to deliver excellence at scale.
As we move forward, I look forward to working closely with all of you to shape a Tata Projects that is not just project-ready, but future-ready.
Let’s co-create this journey — with courage, curiosity, and collaboration.
