Upholding Human Rights: A Commitment at Tata Projects
As we observe World Human Rights Day, it’s an opportune moment to reflect on the significance of human rights in our organisation and beyond. At Tata Projects, our commitment to human rights is deeply rooted in the ethos of the Tata Group, which has always been dedicated to nation-building and enhancing community welfare. The essence of our work lies in the belief that progress cannot be achieved without prioritising human rights.
Human rights are a key material issue at Tata Projects, and we take this commitment seriously. Our Business & Human Rights Policy is aligned with international standards, including the Universal Declaration of Human Rights and the UN Guiding Principles on Business and Human Rights. This alignment is further supported by the Tata Code of Conduct and local laws. We strictly prohibit child and forced labour, champion freedom of association, and prevent discrimination in all forms across our operations.
One of the pillars of our human rights commitment is our training program, ‘Sankalp’. This initiative emphasises our pledge to ethical conduct and social responsibility by ensuring compliance with applicable human rights standards. Sankalp is designed for all employees, including our frontline workforce, offering comprehensive education on relevant legislation and compliance areas. Through interactive workshops and case studies, participants gain valuable insights into upholding human rights principles both in and out of the workplace.
In addition to upholding fundamental human rights, we recognise the importance of supporting those who may be disadvantaged. Our value of inclusion drives us to transform lives, particularly for persons with disabilities. At Tata Projects, we believe that creating an inclusive environment is essential for fostering a diverse workforce.
To this end, we are actively working to ensure that our projects are designed with accessibility in mind. This includes creating infrastructure that is friendly to persons with disabilities, thereby enabling them to fully participate in the opportunities that our projects create. We are committed to making our workplaces and the communities we serve more inclusive, ensuring that everyone has equal access to resources and opportunities.
As a business leader, I strongly believe that companies have a pivotal role in promoting human rights. Beyond compliance, we must set an example and lead by action. At Tata Projects, we have established guardrails to ensure that our operations respect and promote human rights. This proactive approach is essential, especially in the construction industry, where the design and execution of projects can significantly impact the lives of individuals and communities.
To truly embed human rights into our organisational culture, it is vital to socialise our policy at every level. By incorporating human rights considerations into daily operations, we can elevate our standards and ensure that our policies translate into meaningful actions. This commitment not only enhances our reputation but also raises the benchmark for others in the industry.
Our dedication to human rights is also intertwined with our sustainability efforts. We recognise that sustainable development goes hand-in-hand with the protection and promotion of human rights. By integrating sustainable practices into our projects, we are not only ensuring environmental responsibility but also safeguarding the rights and dignity of those affected by our work.
As we celebrate World Human Rights Day, let us reaffirm our commitment to upholding human rights, fostering inclusion, and leading by example in our industry. At Tata Projects, we believe that by prioritsing human rights, we are not only contributing to the betterment of our communities but also paving the way for a more equitable and just society. Together, let us continue to build a brighter future for all.
In the spirit of Tata’s legacy, let’s drive change—one project at a time.
